The defendants are accused of using “information warfare” to sow discord and influence the election by creating fake personas on social media and staging rallies. There is no allegation in the indictment that the conduct altered the outcome of the election, nor is there any allegation that any American was a knowing participant in the attempt to influence the election, according to a Department of Justice press release. The indictment says that some of the defendants “communicated with unwitting individuals associated with the Trump campaign” and with political … [Read more...] about Special counsel indicts 13 Russian nationals in alleged effort to boost Donald Trump campaign

Donald Trump is once again feeling the wrath of a musician who claims the Republican presidential candidate is using his music without permission.A lawyer for Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler sent Trump a letter Saturday demanding that the candidate stop using Aerosmith’s 1973 hit “Dream On” at campaign events, the New York Times reports.Trump was previously targeted by the group R.E.M. for his use of the song “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” And before that, he was criticized by Neil Young for using “Rockin in the Free World.”After Young’s complaint, Trump’s campaign said it had secured a public performance license from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). In addition, the Times points out, campaign events are often held at venues that already have music licenses from ASCAP and BMI.The law is “somewhat unclear,” according to the Times, because politicians … [Read more...] about Donald Trump campaign is once again targeted for song use; is ASCAP license enough?
The New York Times, earlier this month, reported that “secret ledgers” in Ukraine show $12.7 million in cash payments designated for former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort from Ukraine’s pro-Russian political party. Days later, the Associated Press reported that Manafort helped the pro-Russian party “secretly route at least $2.2 million in payments to two prominent Washington lobbying firms.” These stories sparked a flurry of questions about whether Manafort and others unlawfully failed to register with the Department of Justice as foreign agents. This coverage, in turn, has sent “shockwaves” in Washington, with Politico today noting that “reps from multiple firms who lobby for foreign entities think this might be a tipping point, and the feds might take a broader look at other firms and clients.” As we face a potential “tipping point” in FARA interest and … [Read more...] about Trump Campaign – Have We Reached Foreign Agents Registration Unit (FARA) “Tipping Point”?
Donald Trump campaign officials haven’t exactly been bashful about cashing in on their ties to the President in the lobbying sphere. Take Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager. Shortly after the election, he cofounded a lobbying and consulting firm, Avenue Strategies, boasting to domestic and foreign clients of his administration ties. He left the firm in early May, after news outlets reported he failed to register as a lobbyist even as he was pitching face time with the President to clients. Now, another name on the Trump campaign’s payroll, Healy Baumgardner-Nardone, who was a communications adviser and spokeswoman, will be representing a foreign client, the government of Malaysia.According to a Department of Justice filing, 45 Group, a project under Baumgardner’s firm, Mona Lisa Communications, will represent the government of Malaysia with “government relations and public relations services.” (Yeah, we know that didn’t … [Read more...] about Add Another to the List of Former Trump Campaign Staffers Lobbying for Foreign Clients
Donald Trump campaign of pulling a gun on a staffer. The lawsuit further alleges that then-senior Trump campaign officials, including Corey Lewandowski, were aware of the incident but refused to intervene. WBTV reporter Nick Ochsner obtained a copy of the lawsuit and posted it online Thursday morning. The lawsuit was filed by self-described “loyal Trump campaign staffer” Vincent Bordini. Both Donald J. Trump for President, Inc and Earl Phillip, the former North Carolina state director of the Trump campaign, are named as defendants. According to WBTV, Phillips was removed from his position with the campaign last week. The complaint accuses Phillip of pulling out a loaded .45 caliber pistol during a car ride in February 2016 and then jamming the barrel of the pistol into Bordini’s kneecap.“Vincent froze. Phillip’s gun was loaded and the safety was off. A bump in the road would likely result in a bullet hole, and worse, in … [Read more...] about Lawsuit Accuses Former Trump Campaign State Director of Pulling Gun on Staffer
, several watchdog groups called on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate whether Donald Trump‘s campaign is “engaging in knowing and willful violations of federal campaign finance laws.” The complaints stem from allegations that Trump’s campaign continues to solicit illegal donations from foreign nationals.Last month, the Campaign Legal Center filed a complaint with the FEC after Trump’s campaign reportedly sent dozens of prominent Icelandic, Scottish, Australian and British politicians fundraising emails seeking donations. Trump was trying to drum up support after the recent ‘Brexit’ vote in which the U.K. voted to leave the European Union. Only thing is that federal law is pretty clear that soliciting donations from foreign nationals is illegal.“This is an open and shut case of the Trump campaign illegally soliciting foreign contributions,” said Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer in a … [Read more...] about Watchdog Groups Call on DOJ to Investigate Donald Trump’s Campaign
There has been much talk of late about Donald Trump and the law. In addition to his regular threats to sue Ted Cruz, LawNewz.com discovered Trump has been named as a plaintiff and defendant in at least 169 different federal lawsuits. Some of the cases have been resolved, a few dismissed as frivolous, others privately settled. In the context of that research, we found one that was particularly interesting, even scandalous. So we did some further digging and obtained an exclusive copy of the $125 million lawsuit filed in 1997, which had been buried deep in a federal archive warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri. The case has almost never been reported on, and the shocking allegations just seemed to suddenly vanish in an era before the widespread availability of the internet. The lawsuit was filed by Jill Harth who then went by Jill Harth Houraney on April 25, 1997. Harth, who was in her early 30’s at the time, alleged that Trump engaged in hostile and offensive sexual … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Inside The $125 Million Donald Trump Sexual Assault Lawsuit
Donald Trump campaign says he will write a book about the campaign, knowing full well he may be risking a major lawsuit over a nondisclosure agreement he previously signed.Roger Stone told the New York Post on Thursday that he plans to write a book about the 2016 campaign and he does not believe his nondisclosure agreement with Trump prevents him from doing so.“My lawyers believe the nondisclosure agreement I signed is unenforceable,” Stone told the Post. “And in any case, I’m not going to write a book trashing Trump.”Stone said his book will focus on the difference in how the media treated after his former boss, Richard Nixon, compared to how they treated Hillary Clinton.“They brought [Nixon] down,” Stone told the newspaper. “But in Hillary’s case, they suppress or ignore her wrongdoings. It’s the exact opposite of the Nixon era.”Stone’s lack of concern over the nondisclosure agreement is … [Read more...] about Roger Stone Says He’ll Risk Lawsuit to Write Book About Trump Campaign
The Guardian had an exclusive report saying that Trump campaign CEO Steve Bannon is registered to vote in Florida, despite not actually living in Florida. They even called it an “apparent violation of crucial swing state’s election law.” But apparently, some critics have pointed to problems with the story. As Politico‘s senior writer, Marc Caputo, discovered, Bannon never actually voted in Miami-Dade county. Caputo called it a “bull*** story.”The Guardian reported that Bannon had an active voter registration in Miami-Dade County. Their investigation found that the house on the registration was vacant and due to be demolished. The article said Bannon may have violated the law because he registered with false information. Guardian writer Jon Swaine is sticking by his story, and fired back at Caputo this morning:However, Caputo replied that that is “hypertechnical flyspecking, not a clean … [Read more...] about ‘Bullsh*t’ Called on Story Accusing Trump Campaign CEO Steve Bannon of Illegal Voter Registration
The order was issued by U.S. District Court John Vazquez in response to a motion filed last week by the Democratic National Committee that accused the RNC of voter intimidation and violating a longstanding consent decree. The decree came about in 1981, after Republican officials allegedly engaged in intimidation tactics against minority voters in the name of “ballot security.” The decree barred the RNC from engaging in various polling-related activities.Judge Vazquez’s order specifically requires the RNC to provide additional information about comments made in recent months by vice presidential candidate Mike Pence and Donald Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway:An affidavit or affidavits by a person or persons with personal knowledge setting forth in detail Defendant’s efforts with the Trump Campaign to work with state governments and secretaries of state to ensure “ballot integrity” as indicated by Governor Mike Pence … [Read more...] about Judge Orders RNC to Detail Any Agreements With Trump Campaign to Engage in ‘Poll Watching’
